Representation Blog Post

In the Big Bang Theory represented many different groups within the show. Sometimes these groups are portrayed in a positive light, while others they are in a negative one.

One of these groups is women. In the show women are portrayed to be very stereotypical. One example of this is Penny, who is portrayed as a stereotypical popular girl. She is constantly seen shopping, drinking alcohol, and overall being less intelligent than the rest of the cast. The show also puts women into the stereotypical mother role. This is displayed by Bernadette, whose entire characteristic in the second half of the show is being a mother. These portrayals are negative and put more stereotypes onto women.

The next group, is the Jewish community. While this role isn't apparent in Howard Wolowitz, whenever his ethnicity and religion is brought up, it is in a very negative light. The rest of the characters and the show itself constantly make jokes about his ethnicity. One example of this, is in a moment where Rajesh assumed that someone in Howard's family was a lawyer, because he was Jewish. Overall, this portrayal is a negative one of the Jewish culture in this part. On the other hand, not many jokes are made about his Judiasm and instead, jokes about Howard are normally about his height or job, so the portrayal could also be considered positive..

Lastly, the representation of Indians in the show comes from the character Rajesh Koothrappali. His representation is extremely stereotypical and borderline racist. Throughout the show, they make it very apparent that he is Indian, and many jokes are made about his race over and over again.
