In our class AICE Media Studies, we recently had our first quiz. In this quiz, we had to take 15 shots of an inanimate object as the main subject, to create a story. In it, we had to utilize the different types of shots we learned in effective ways to create meaning. Me and my partner decided to approach by telling the story of a pencil's life. We first planned the story out and how we wanted to tell it. We established each shot we wanted to take and what type of shot we wanted it to be. The next day, I went to my partner's house to finally film the project. The story takes place in the point of view of a pencil. It begins with the pencil being happy and writing different papers for its owner, but suddenly the pencil breaks. The pencil is visibly upset, but luckily the owner has a pencil sharpener to make everything right. The owner continues working with the pencil, until he finally finishes his work. When he finishes, he places the pencil on the edge of his desk. The man's dog comes into the room when suddenly he attacks the pencil breaking it in two. The man finds the pencil, and sharpens it once again, but this time the pencil is a lot more beaten up and worn down. When the pencil finally breaks again, the man discards it into a trash can where we realize that there have been several other pencils which have suffered the same fate. The story ends with the pencil's POV where we see the man writing with a brand new pencil, starting the cycle over again. Overall, I feel like my partner and I could have done a better job using correct shots for the correct moments, and correctly identifying which shots we used. On the other hand, I believe that my partner and I did a good job with our storytelling and getting the message we wanted across. If you want to see my project the link for it is linked in this post.
