Sound Project

Recently in our AICE Media Studies class, our teacher assigned us a new project. The project required us to create a 1-2 minute scene that occurs in 1-2 minutes using only sound. We had to find audio files online that matched the sound we were looking for and create four sounds from scratch called foley.

The first step of the process of creating the project was to create an idea. My partner Daniela and I brainstormed for an entire class period in order to decide what to do. We went through many ideas, but we knew we wanted something unique. We settled on the idea of a man in his house watching TV when suddenly he hears a bizarre noise, so he goes out to check on it. The man then finds a monster, and unfortunately gets eaten by it. After deciding on our idea, we created a list of scenes and the sounds we would add along with it (Link to planning below). We showed it to our teacher, and thankfully she approved of our plan. This allowed for us to be prepared for when we were to find audio files and create the project.

After the planning was complete, we took it and found audio files for each of the sounds we aimed to incorporate into our project. This step was extremely difficult and took a lot of time and consideration. It was hard choosing sounds that fit the energy and mood that we wanted to give off. In this step, I was extremely picky, which I believe led to a better product for my team. After this was completed, we had to complete the foley sounds we decided to make. These included the pressing of a remote which we used as a calculator, the opening and closing of a door, fake running and walking on grass, an AC unit which we used as a blow dryer, and much more. I found this step fun to do and it may have been my favorite part.

The last step was to edit all of the sounds together to create the scene. This step was by far the most tedious and downloading all of the files took an hour alone. Overall it took me about three hours to edit the entire project due to audio transitions being added, ensuring sounds weren't too quiet or too loud, adjusting the length of clips, adding effects to the audio (for example making the office theme song sound as if it was coming out of an old TV), and many other tasks. After I finished editing I was relieved to finally submit it, and overall, I'm happy with how it came out. If you want to listen to it for yourself, I'll leave a link down below for you.
